In this C2 English-English Mediation Activity, students are asked to help a friend understand a personal situation by providing a different perspective with information from a creative piece of writing. It is a C2 level intralinguistic (English-English) mediation task that has as the source an excerpt from a book.

As part of their strategy training, in the pre-mediation section students are asked to adapt the language to their interlocutor by explaining key words.

This mediation activity is excellent to train several mediation strategies and microskills:

  • rephrasing
  • streamlining a text
  • selecting the key ideas
  • adapting the language by explaining key words

Note to the teacher: Ask your students to change partners for the second round, so, even though they will be mediating the same text, at least they’ll have the opportunity to do it with a different person. Bear in mind that the students that mediate in second place will benefit from the mediation the student in the first round carried out. The second mediation round could be carried out in a different session.
