This C1 Intralinguistic (English-English) Oral Mediation Task depicts a current real-life situation that is rather common in our virtual world.

The situation describes the interaction between a non-proficient speaker of English and someone called Sherman Moten, who has sent an email to inform that the former’s website has been hacked. This non-proficient speaker asks for help to make sure they understand the information in this upsetting email.

“Hacked Website” is perfect to help students understand how their speaking skills are closely related to the mediation strategies and microskills that will shape their mediated message successfully.

They will need to:

  • show understanding of the situation
  • adapt the message to their interlocutor
  • clarify by rephrasing
  • give advice and express conditions
  • organize key ideas

To really get the hang of these rather abstract concepts for students we have included a section called EXAM TIP in which they will find real sample sentences showing how those strategies and skills materialize into sentences they can use to demonstrate them.

This task has been designed so it can be used for C1 Oral Mediation Exam Training, serving as training both for students and for teachers.

For the former, we have included a guide with the mediation strategies and microskills that mediators are likely to use when they are relaying the message. They are invited to identify which of them they have used to produce their mediated message.

You have the same topic available in Written Mediation format, so you can choose the one that suits you best.
